<p><strong>Ima&#8217;s Story</strong></p>
<p>In the year 2004 Ima was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon and Liver Cancer. Ima was a vibrant 52 year old woman with a golden main of a lioness and a contagious laughter that was much larger than her petite 5&#8217;2&#8243; frame . A skillful and caring nurse by profession, Ima had delivered thousands of babies across the former Soviet Union, Israel and the United States.  Devastated and helpless in the face of a &#8220;seemingly&#8221; sudden terminal illness Ima laid in bed empty of the bigger-than-life laughter.  And I, her daughter-in-law, was her care-giver for the last 3 months of her life.</p>
<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t understand,&#8221; Ima would say to me &#8220;I eat a lot of fresh salads and fruits, I exercise, I pray.  How did this happen to me?!&#8221;  And then Ima would answer her own question &#8220;I know where I made the mistake.  Cancer did not just suddenly happen to me. For the last year, since my youngest boy had been deported back to Israel, every time I ate I would be crying, tears falling into my plate.  I cried and I cried and I was all alone.  I should have been blessing my food with joy and gratitude, instead of putting more sadness and despair into my body.  After a whole year of eating tears, my body simply could not take it any more.&#8221;</p>
<p>In this article I pass on to you a small piece of Ima&#8217;s legacy.<br />
Her message about food and eating is simple:<br />

Here are the three golden rules to make your new practice of conscious food combining a total success.<span id="more-72"></span></p>
<p><strong>Three Rules:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Eat      these foods alone:  melons, fruits,      liquids<br />
Here is a fruit chant for you &#8211;  &#8220;Eat them alone or leave them alone&#8221;</li>
<li>Do NOT      combine protein and starches.                                                                                                                               Hydrochloric acid is necessary to digest protein.  Starch neutralized the acid and the protein does not digest properly.</li>
<li>Do NOT      eat lighter foods such as liquids and fruit WITH or AFTER consuming heavier foods such as nuts, seeds, proteins, starches and heavy veggies.</li>
</ol>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span id="more-71"></span> From the bright white emptiness she grabbed a lonely vanilla soy yogurt.  And with the refrigerator door still open, her eyes half-closed, she mindlessly ate the yogurt with a black plastic spoon.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It was when Alice had discarded the empty yogurt container into the blue trash can in the kitchen pantry that something exploded in her mind, “It’s two o’clock in the morning, you just ate a yogurt and it’s going to make you fat, <span style="font-size:14pt;">fat</span>, <strong>fat!</strong> And nobody is going to like you, and everybody is going to hate you!” Alice’s feet became cold.  She stumbled her way back into the living room and plumped her brick-of-a body onto the dark blue papasan chair.  Her face fell down into her lap like a ripe Red Delicious apple and she sobbed.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">All was quite except for a distant melody coming from a car parked outside in the snow.  It was Sade singing,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“<span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New'; color: black;">you think i’d leave you down when you’re down on your knees<br />
No I wouldn’t do that.<br />
And when you’re on the outside baby and you can`t get in<br />
i will show you you’re so much better than you know.”</span></p>
<p>The following morning Alice woke up late and the first thing she did was pull out the phone book from under the kitchen table and look under the therapist section for someone who specialized in eating disorders.  Alice was ready to ask for help.

<p>Do you ever experience incidents of gas, bloating, low energy or weight gain?  And if so, do you simply take Tums, drink a Red Bull, or harness yourself to a treadmill only to have your symptoms reappear in the future?   What if I told you that  the root of your discomfort may lie in the combining of incompatible foods in one meal.<span id="more-19"></span></p>
<p>Recently I was assisting my friend,  <a title="Raw Food Chef" href="http://www.purejoyplanet.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.purejoyplanet.com/?referer=');">Elaina Love</a> , a master raw food chef during her gourmet raw food preparation class at <a title="Raw Food Restaurant" href="http://www.cafesoulstice.com/Pg/Classes2.htm" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.cafesoulstice.com/Pg/Classes2.htm?referer=');">Cafe Soulstice</a> San Mateo, CA.   &#8220;Cleansing and Detoxing with Raw Foods&#8221; was the theme.  There were about thirty people in the class, all excited to learn how to make energy soup, <em>green power smoothies</em>, and low-glycemic desserts.  But the fist thing Elaina spoke about was the importance of food combining.</p>
<p>What is food combining?</p>
<p>Food combining is the combination of foods we put down the digestive track in one sitting.  Lets imagine a decorative glass bottle filled in layers with different-colored sand. After eating a meal our stomach may look similar to such a sand bottle.  The only difference is that the food does not stay permanently in the stomach like the sand in the bottle.  The food transits out.  And it is the transient time for each food group that is of interest to us in the subject of food combining.</p>
<p>First lets identify the different food groups:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Animal proteins:</strong> flesh foods, dairy, eggs<br />
<strong>Dense oily proteins:</strong> seeds, avocados, nuts and  oils</li>
<li><strong>Starches:</strong> corn, artichokes, carrots, potato family, all grains and beans</li>
<li><strong>Low starches:</strong> all green leafy veggies, sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, peppers</li>
<li><strong>Fruits</strong></li>
<li><strong>Melons</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Now lets see how long it takes for each food group to leave the stomach:</p>
<ul>
<li>Water:  5-10 min.</li>
<li>Juice:  15-20 min.</li>
<li>Fruit and melons:  20-45 min.</li>
<li>Sprouts:  1 hour</li>
<li>Most vegetable:  1-2 hours</li>
<li>Grains and beans:  1-2 hours</li>
<li>Protein:  3-4 hours</li>
<li>Animal flesh food: 6-8 hours</li>
</ul>
<p>Have you noticed how fruit leaves the stomach in less then an hour, while the dense oily proteins like seeds and nuts stay in the stomach for 3-4 hours. So if we first eat nuts and then on the top of it put fruit (or eat fruits and nuts together), the fruit is going to be ready to get out of the stomach in no time, but will have nowhere to go because there is something still being digested below it. So the fruit will just sit on the top and ferment, creating incidents of gas, bloating, heartburn, low energy and weight gain.</p>
<p>Fear not my friends, Tums and the gang maybe going out of business, but there is a new sheriff in town- proper food combining.  Sure, go head and follow a few rules, after all, what do you have to lose except constipation.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="font-style:normal;">There is a debate that in today’s polluted environment the nutritional value of food is much lower than it was at the time of Hippocrates.  The soil is too depleted some say, after all minerals come from the soil and not the plants.  And if in the past, one could eat just a few carrots to get the Recommended Daily Value of Vitamin A, today one would have to eat a train wagon worth of carrots. Thus is the rise of vitamin and mineral supplements &#8211; a train wagon worth of carrots in a tiny pill.</span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">&#8220;There are about 60 nutrients known at this time to be essensial to human nutrition,&#8221; says Donna Gates, the author of <a href="http://truenourishment.wordpress.com/library/living-food-nutrition/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/truenourishment.wordpress.com/library/living-food-nutrition/?referer=');">The Body Ecology Diet</a>,  &#8220;Yet even if you swallowed a mega-vitamin/mineral pill consisting of generous quantities of all these nutrients, you could not maintain your health.&#8221;  And this is because the whole foods contain elements (spiritual essences) essential  to our health that modern medicine/science has not yet identified.  Our arrogance leads us to believe we can duplicate the intricate relationships among these components that nature provides.</p>
